Interview with Manga Artist Kylie Scollick
Kylie is a fantastic artist from New Zealand and Letraset has been following her work for several years (see when we last caught up with Kylie HERE).
As both a Disney enthusiast and an animal lover (Kylie works at Wellington Zoo!), Kylie allows these influences to shine through in her artwork. Make sure to read on to find out more about Kylie’s art (and an interesting tip using instant coffee!).
What are your tools of the trade? (what materials do you use?)
I use a variety of different traditional mediums.
Though markers are my most used tool, I do like to work with watercolour paints, Acrylic paints, coloured pencils and sometimes soft pastels.
I also like to mix things up with other additions to the paper or canvas. I’m a big fan of using coffee (watered down instant coffee which I paint on with a brush) and sometimes even make-up.
If it’s going to leave a fun effect, I’m game to give it a go!

How did you first get into Manga art & illustration?
I think I just kind of started drawing as a little girl and kept going ever since.
I found Illustration was one of my most loved past times and continued it as I went through school.
When I was younger I either wanted to work with art or animals. So I decided as I grew up that I should try doing my tertiary education in either of those things.
I studied art and later studied captive wild animal management after I left high school and now I do freelance art and work in a zoo, so I got the best of both worlds, really. Plus, the animals are great subjects to draw and give me inspiration!
Illustration is not just a part-time job for me, but also something I do for fun or to unwind after a long day – it’s pretty much one of my ways to relax (I enjoy drawing women the most as they’re fun to design and create outfits for).
Just picking up a pencil and drawing whatever comes to mind.
I guess that’s why I’m still doing it to this day.
